Presented to a sold-out crowd at the 2024 edition of the FTA, ODE is an unclassifiable and powerful piece for eleven performers, somewhere between a sacrificial rite and a pop-rock spectacle.
Inspired by pagan processions, the group of performers chants on stage, tirelessly repeating a choral chant that resembles an insistent prayer. In Catherine Gaudet’s choreographic signature, both disconcerting and electrifying, the scene, initially harmless and naive, gradually becomes more complex to produce an almost psychedelic, hallucinogenic effect.
Catherine Gaudet created her first choreography in 2004. Since then, she has created eleven long works and several short forms, presented in Quebec and abroad. Catherine is the artistic and general director of Compagnie Catherine Gaudet since 2019, a member of Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique, an associate creator at DLD – Daniel Léveillé Danse and an artist in residence at Agora de la danse. In her choreographic work, she probes the complexity and ambiguity of the psyche and inscribes contradictions in the flesh. She depicts an elusive reality, developing a universe made of intersections of fluctuating and innumerable identities. Her dance is a descent into oneself, an interpenetration of the deep layers constituting beings destined to perpetual mutations.
