After travelling to Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Taiwan and Austria, Black Lights, winner of the Grand Prix de la critique française, Best Show of 2023 and Grand Prix du syndicat professionnel de la critique française 2024, arrives in Montreal.
Inspired by true events, Black Lights is a show-series-manifesto performed by seven performers that documents the daily violence committed against women. Renowned French choreographer Mathilde Monnier brings feminine rage and anger to life. Drawing on nine texts by female authors from France, the United Kingdom, Greece, Poland…, words become gestures. Emotion, derision, realism, and humor become body—a manifest female body!
Black Lights is inspired by the televised series by Arte H24 (2021)
Mathilde Monnier occupies a leading position in the French and international contemporary dance scene. She has created more than 50 choreographic pieces presented on major international stages, from the Festival d’Avignon to the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, through New York, Vienna, Berlin, and London, and has received several awards for her work (prix Ministère de la culture, Grand Prix SACD). She has also directed the CND – Centre national de la danse in Paris. From piece to piece, she thwarts expectations by presenting constantly renewed work. Her artistic questions are linked to issues of movement writing, in connection with broader questions such as the common, the relationship to music, and memory. She has already performed in Quebec, notably in Gustavia in duet with La Ribot, presented at Agora de la danse in 2014.
