Ivanie Aubin-Malo is a multi-faceted Wolastoq and Québécoise artist who uses dance, music and song to take us on a journey of renewed storytelling, invoking the Giants, entities from the various oral traditions of the Wabanakiak people.
This enthralling performance, staged by Ivanie Aubin-Malo and violinist Julian Rice (Mi’kmaq and Kanien’keha:ka), takes us on a fascinating journey through the oral, sung and danced traditions of the Wabanakiak peoples. Wahsipekuk : Au-delà des montagnes (Beyond the Mountains) is a leap into the invisible space of dreams. An attempt to reconnect and perpetuate the transmission of knowledge. Co-initiated by Ivanie Aubin-Malo and Natasha Kanapé Fontaine in 2020, the project invites the public to experience a lively celebration of the past and the present.
Ivanie Aubin-Malo is a Wolastoq and Québécoise choreographer, performer and curator whose projects reflect on ecology and human ethics in relation to the environment. Her artistic research invites the body to renew contact with the beauty of the Wolastoqey language in relation to the territory. In 2020, she initiated the MAQAHATINE series of events, bringing together Indigenous movement artists to break down isolation, cultivate inspiration, facilitate knowledge sharing and dare to collaborate. With a research project co-initiated by Natasha Kanapé Fontaine, Ivanie created Wahsipekuk : Au-delà des montagnes, a performance about the Wolastoqiyik giants, with the aim of reviving and perpetuating the transmission of knowledge through oral, sung and danced storytelling. Based in L’Islet (Quebec) in the Wolastokuk since 2021, she dreams of a Wolastoqey cultural centre in the region to allow members to reconnect with their community through cultural and artistic events.
