Out Innerspace returns to Agora with a group piece that hovers between the tragic and the comic, ritual and chaos. Our dreams and fears are intertwined in this expressive, theatrical world as only Out Innerspace knows how to construct them.
This new creation stages an unlikely constellation of characters who are past their prime and wondering if their better days are behind them. The rhinoceros, the skeleton, the matador, the oil, and a cockroach struggle for relevance, transforming themselves and discovering what they bring to uncertain futures. Straddling the tightrope between comedy and tragedy, this project is about what it takes to stand the test of time and the threat of extinction of our dreams. Daring, thought-provoking dance!
Vancouver-based Out Innerspace Dance Theatre (OIS), founded on unceded Coast Salish Aboriginal land by Tiffany Tregarthen and David Raymond, has spent nearly 20 years creating extraordinary dance experiences through uncompromising rigour and ingenuity. They were recently named Associate Artists of the Agora de la danse and have received commissions from Ballet BC, Nederland Dance Theatre 2, Hessisches Staats Ballett (Germany) and Gibney Dance (New York). Bygones has been performed 50 times in 12 countries, including guest performances at Julidans (Amsterdam), Torino Danza, Colors Festival (Stuttgart), Teatros del Canal (Madrid), Dansens Hus (Stockholm) and Canada’s National Arts Centre. Their education program, Modus Operandi, provides relevant dance development and one-on-one mentorship, producing some of Canada’s most radical and inspiring young dance artists.
