They enter softly with a muffled tread into an atmosphere that evokes another time. Venture forward with these five women and embrace their enigmatic, troubling and disarming movements.
Inspired by the iconographic work and narrative of the Portuguese visual artist Paula Rego, whose themes are often excluded from Western pictorial tradition, this piece by Louise Bédard reflects our society’s stance towards ageing, a slow and natural process that nonetheless hurls us into a mad rush to protect ourselves from growing old.
With images of idealized and wounded women, accompanied by visual, physical and material stimuli, La Démarquise gives rise to a dialogue that encompasses vexation and emancipation, drama and sensual delight, portrayed onstage by the poetry of the body.
