Chœur et chorégraphes brings about an encounter between dance and song, driven by the desire to cleverly blend vocal music with the body’s melodies.
For the ninth edition of this project, choreographers Charles Brecard, Lucie Grégoire and James Viveiros were asked to incorporate the twelve members of the Mruta Mertsi Vocal Ensemble into their choreography, to music composed especially for them. Percussion instruments, both classical and invented, punctuate this exchange rich in dancing bodies, singing bodies and poetry.
As a choral conductor, interdisciplinary artist André Pappathomas has developed and invested his work as a composer and director. As director of the Mruta Mertsi Vocal Ensemble, he has conceived and produced numerous works in conjunction with other artistic disciplines: visual arts, theatre, literature, and dance (more than 40 choreographers and performers have collaborated on the many editions of Chœur et chorégraphes). In 2022, the Réseau des Maisons de la culture de Montréal awarded him the prize for social and environmental responsibility for Les chants de l’île, which he created with 10 choirs from as many cultural communities.
