Chaque jour se tenir entre les trous is an interdisciplinary performance. Sylvie Cotton, a visual artist, explores breath as a universal experience through storytelling, image, object and movement.
Far beyond the simple physical act, breathing is the expression of a common breath spanning the world, a breath shared across time and history. The act of inhaling/exhaling has a poetic and political dimension: it carries nutrients as well as pollution, words of kindness and of revolt. To study breathing is to contemplate the interdependence of all beings and the subtle but powerful dynamics of the movement of the living.
Sylvie Cotton studied literature before founding DARE-DARE in 1985, a Montreal artist-run centre known for its interventions in public spaces. After years as a cultural worker, Cotton began an interdisciplinary artistic practice in 1997, which includes performance and action art, contextual and relational art, installation, drawing and writing. Her projects are carried out in an aesthetic of cordiality, abundance and melting, and their forms speak to modes of spontaneity, offering and collection. Her daily somatic experience and the observation of her own stories remain one of the main subjects reworked by her practice. She has presented her projects in Quebec, the United States, Europe, Mexico and Japan.
