Anxiety about the blank page is not restricted to writers. Haunted by the fear of presenting the same patterns over and over, of repeating movements, the dynamic choreographer Dominique Porte questions her very approach to creating dance. For this new solo she called on some thirty collaborators, professional dancers and neophytes, assigning them a choreographic phrase and asking each one to interpret it in his or her own fashion. She captured these scattered fragments on video and then made them her own. Through this complicit identity theft and the input of those whose work she has cannibalized, she redefines her own limits and deconstructs her dance self, walking along the narrow line that separates what she knows and can do from what she doesn’t know how to do. Between filmed sequences and live reinterpretation, she invites the audience to a troubling plunge into her intimate self, with spectators witnessing close up not only the evolution of the piece but the finished product as well. Through the prism of the Other whereby she is fully engaged in the rhythms and nuances of all their bodies, Dominique Porte is finally able to challenge her own dance.
