Imagine a new generation of digital musical instruments, grafted onto the human body, becoming extensions. They would react to varying movements as well as many other possibilities of manipulation. They would allow both the dancers and the musicians to act directly onto the music of a choreographic piece. This futurist vision is already apparent in Isabelle Van Grimde and composer Sean Ferguson‘s exploratory work with researcher Marcelo Wanderley from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT). As a continuation of the piece Duo pour un violoncelle et un danseur, in which live music was received, transformed and spacialized by the performers using a musical instrument named the T-Stick, this collaboration will culminate in 2013 with the creation of a stage piece titled Les Gestes. In the meantime, this artistic/scientific team opens the doors of it’s lab for an interactive presentation of the instruments under development. Come see the incredible possibilities these avant-garde instruments can offer.
