Somewhere Between Maybe

Vancouverite Dana Gingras likes to venture off the beaten path. No flash or glitz for her, but rebellious, unruly dance instead. With this new work she thrusts the audience into a timeless space, a place where anything is possible, even the improbable. Positioned so that they are overhanging the set, the spectators see a bare stage where two solitary figures slink in, enveloped by the nostalgic accents of the soundtrack. In a whimsical piece rich in props and bright colours, the dancers are masked. Don’t be fooled by their awkwardness, their hesitant movements, their disarticulation, their spasms and their vague approximations, however. In a dance that gets down to essentials, out of step with fleeting time, these two virtuosos jump into the links, into the somewhere between, stepping into the breach of the action with a brilliant artistic charge. Somewhere between maybe.
